When I was growing up,  (no, I didn't have to walk to school, uphill, both ways, barefoot) when I wanted money I had to earn it. I babysat every summer from the age of twelve. One year, I babysat a toddler still in diapers and I had never even changed a diaper before. Well, I figured it out and there was no google back then. Barbaric, I know. The point is, when my nieces wanted to hang out with me one day over the summer, I happily brought them to work with me. I explained I needed some videos to advertise our storage units which led to lots of other explaining on the importance of small businesses but I will leave that for another day. My nieces don't know anything about storage, but they do know how to be cute and I don't know how to make a video of a 10'x15' storage unit interesting. So, we learned together, not that we have a masterpiece on our hands, but we learned, without the help of google, how to make a video that combined our knowledge together and got the job done. Conclusion, you can do two cartwheels inside a 10'x15' storage unit. And, kids wages are a lot more now than they were 35 years ago; $20 each, yeeesh.

I am writing this to let you know how much I love our community and am a firm believer in helping neighbors. The tragic flooding last month caused our city to come to a standstill, yet worse, people were left homeless, irreplaceable belongings were lost, furniture ruined, and lots and lots of carpet and sheet rock require replacement. The neighborhood across from our facility was hit hard and several of our current tenants homes were flooded. Wanting to help, I told everyone I knew and posted an ad on Facebook that I would allow anyone affected by the flood to use a 10x10 storage unit free of charge for 60 days, availability permitting. Many people took me up on our offer for help. The look of shock on the flood victim's faces, their disbelief at the situation, and the overwhelming clean up ahead, did not deter from their sense of gratitude at the help we offered. The units were empty, people needed them to store what belongings they could salvage, we offered, and they gratefully took them. Further, the teachers at Black Elementary wanted to help keep their kids spirits up while they were out of school for the week by throwing a hot dog picnic for them. We were asked to provide parking since there was no room in the neighborhood as they did not want to hinder the massive clean up operations going on. Of course, I agreed, never realizing the entire school staff would take over every free space of land we have. The sheer number of volunteers was incredible. Can you imagine how happy those kids were having a picnic with their teachers? The teachers and staff at Black Elementary, also, donated cleaning supplies and bottles of water and handed out gift cards to families. There were countless acts of generosity and support immediately following the flood, as well as, continuing efforts. My friends have turned their birthday party show with local bands at Rudyard's on May 13th into a benefit for our friends, a family that lost everything in the flood and like so many, did not have flood insurance on their contents. I, also, want to give a huge thank you to my mom, part owner of Cypress Creek Storage, who immediately opened up her home to my friends who lost everything. You have to understand, they had a home one day and the next it was taken away from them by the flood waters. Going from being a homeowner to homeless is shocking, terrifying, and overwhelming, especially when your daughter is only twelve months old. The important thing is we all come together and help in whatever way we can, sometimes it's offering a place to stay, sometimes it's volunteering your time, sometimes it's donating money or items, and sometimes it's simply an offer of a dry place to store your belongings.

Small Business Success Story

I think there is too much focus on negative news stories so I am going to focus on the positive. Since I am a card carrying member of the glass is half full team (figuratively speaking of course), I thought I would share a small business success story. This story is about my older brother, and how he built a local storage company from the ground up, but first let's clear up one thing. Yes, this photo is of my brother with his family at a #Texans football game (the one they won to get into the playoffs, we won't go into the Texans losing since we are all still disappointed about that) and yes they had a great time; but a customer gave those tickets to him and that is how he was lucky enough to be there that day.  So way back in 1999, my brother was running his other company, Yardmasters, Inc. out of an extra bedroom in our parents home and needed more space for his day to day operations, that coupled with the fact that all of his company's lawn equipment was stolen out of the pole barn on the back of the property twice (thieves suck!) had him looking for land to buy so he could build an office with a shop attached. Randy found the perfect location next to an Allied Cement plant on Telge Rd. The land was close to 6 acres and had a good amount of frontage so he scraped together every penny he had for a down payment so he could buy it. Well, I can tell you just about everything that could go wrong with the land clearing did go wrong and it was pretty frustrating at times but perseverance is key. Further, Randy got it into his head that he would offer people a service that was in desperate need; boat storage (not sure how Randy actually came up with that as he doesn't even own a boat). Most neighborhoods in Cypress are managed by Homeowner Associations that do not allow boats to be stored in driveways, Randy believed there was a high demand for boat storage that he could fulfill. Slowly, the office and shop were built along with 30 (that's right 30) brand spanking new storage units and a new company was born in 2001, Cypress Creek Storage. (Randy graduated from Cy-Fair High School, #GoBobcats, but the Cy-Fair Storage name was already taken so he took the next best choice, this was before Cy-Woods was even thought of.) So, what happened to those 30 storage units? Customers rented them all. So he built a few more, then more customers came and rented those, too. On and on this went until 15 years later in 2016, Cypress Creek Storage has over 450 (yes, 450!) storage units of all sorts and sizes. I made that sound really easy, but you should know that nothing in life is easy and it took hard work (seven days a week hard work), great customer service (that's all me), and sacrificing time spent with family to make it happen. You may wonder how many people store boats in those storage units, since that was the original idea. The answer? Less than 5%. So even though Randy failed at the whole boat storage, he succeeded in general self storage. The importance of successful small business ventures like my brother's is that it helps our community in many ways such as: paying (lots and lots of) taxes (which in turn pays for schools, emergency services, new streets, etc), employing locals (we were brought up in a family where working hard was the only option), and using the services of other local companies (from hiring electricians, to eating at local restaurants). What's next? Well, due to the blending of families, multiple generations living together, people living overseas, people moving from overseas, fixer up cars, classic cars, holiday decorations gone wild, my new home isn't ready yet, my kid just moved back home, and I want my garage back, Cypress Creek Storage is preparing to build two more storage buildings and a new office within the next five years in order to take care of all your storage needs.
